Welcome

Welcome to Doesdesign, specialized in mokume-gane rings, wedding rings, and other jewelry.

Doesdesign is the website of gold- and silversmith Birgit Doesborg of 's-Hertogenbosch. She is one of the few goldsmiths that practices the technique of mokume-gane, a 17th century Japanese metalworking technique where different types of metal layers are forged together under pressure and high temperature.

With this technique Birgit Doesborg develops in her own, unique style jewelry, wedding rings and objects.

Symbolism of Wedding Rings

One line connected directly to the heart. The Egyptians from the time of the Pharaohs have felt that from the fourth finger of the left hand a vein ran directly to the heart was connected.
The Romans had a romantic expression: amoris vein, vein of love.
The romantic idea that wedding rings are direct connection to the heart is, by many, even in these modern times, nurtured.
Two connected rings symbolize the heavens and the earth and the relationship of two people.
The round shape of wedding rings, which has neither beginning nor end, symbolizes the love and marriage between two people.

The origin of the rings "Fault line"

These rings are the result of an experiment, the metal is folded in different ways. The shapes in the ring resemble waves, tsunami, eruption, Pangea, so I call them therefore "Kosho" in Japanese it means "Fault Line"

The whole design process of these rings, you can see them on photo page of flickr.com

The rings are made of: Silver, Gold and Shakudo (copper 5% pure gold).

Original and unique Wedding rings made of Mokume-gane.

The Mokume-gane wedding rings or engagement rings from Does Design are distinctive because of their unique and artistic appearance. Inwardly, as in nature where matter is built up in layers over the years (think of rock or tree growth rings) as these rings are composed of several layers of precious metals. Outwardly, these rings appear on topographic maps, such as river patterns, patterns or slick islands patterns. Mokume-gane means literally "wood grain metal" and is an old Japanese forged technique. This technique is very labour intensive and therefore not widely practices in the jewellery industry. Wedding rings or other jewellery made of Mokume-gane is uncommon.
